If you do not replace water filter cartridges at the recommended intervals, you will be using them past their useful lifespan. This means their effectiveness may be reduced, possibly allowing contaminants to pass through and place you at risk of waterborne diseases.

The material building up on the outside of a filter can also become a breeding ground for bacteria, and add an extra layer of chemicals that the water has to pass through. This will often be noticed by an unpleasant smell or taste in the water.

If you’re connected to a town water supply you can still drink from an expired cartridge with little consequence, assuming there is no noticeable bad taste or smell. After all, we do put tap water in our mouths when brushing our teeth. However, you should still change it because over time those chemicals and bacteria do build up and will affect the taste and quality of your water.
