According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald in August 2019, we ingest on average around 5 grams of plastic every week in our drinking water.
That’s the equivalent of a credit card!

While the effects aren’t yet well known and would appear to pass from our systems without causing harm, there are suggestions it may damage immune systems, cause inflammation, or perhaps carry toxins such as heavy metals or pesticides. This article in The Guardian reported on a study that found a link between microplastics and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
These microplastics can be so tiny that they end up in our groundwater, and are swept up by the wind to come down in rainwater. So not even wells and rainwater tanks are immune to contamination by plastics. Collectively this problem has been estimated to add up to thousands of tons of plastic raining down onto our environment each year.
A secondary problem is that some of these plastics also contain chemicals which can leach out as the plastic breaks down. These chemicals include pigments, BPAs and fire retardants, some of which may be quite toxic.
A personal water filtration like the EZEK EZ-AQUA series can help minimise the risk posed by microplastics by both removing the plastic particles as well as any toxins that may be present.

Another way water filter systems can help the environment is by reducing the amount of plastic that ends up polluting our planet in the first place. Anyone who’s ever participated in a clean-up Australia day knows just how much plastic rubbish ends up out there, and a large chunk of that comes from bottled water products and soft drinks. The discarded bottles float so they end up washed into storm water drains to finish up in our rivers, creeks and eventually our oceans. Not to mention the amount of landfill taken up by them when they don’t float away. The bottles eventually break down into microplastics and end up in our ground water and catchment areas amongst other things. Scientists have termed our era the plastic age rather than the bronze age or iron age, and centuries from now we’ll have our own geological layer visible as a pale pink, blue and white line.
Now while most water filter systems still produce some plastic waste, it is considerably less than buying bottled water products, not to mention considerably cheaper.
The average cost per litre for filtered water from an EZEK system is less than 6¢, whereas bottled water can be anything from around 50¢ per litre right up to more than $10 per litre!
That can easily save more than $1000 per year over buying water, even with the initial cost of the water filter system and replacement filter cartridges factored in.

Based on the average family of four drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water per day (2L) each, x 2 to allow for water used in cooking and food preparation = 5840L per year. $290.80 ÷ 5840L = 5¢/L. That’s just 79¢/day for all 4 people! The equivalent in buying just 2l of water per person for a family of 4 (half the amount above) would be at least $1460 per year, saving $1169.20 per year, and you get to cook and wash your food in filtered water as well!

Switching to clean, filtered water instead of soft drinks isn’t just easier on your wallet but better for your waistline too! Sugary drinks are one of the first things to eliminate in order to maintain a healthy weight, or if you care about your teeth. Diet drinks aren’t much better, with known links to increased risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome.
