When installing a water filter, you may encounter some issues such as no water flow or leaks. Also, once the water filter system has been installed for a while, you might eventually notice reduced water flow or a change in the taste of the water. The table below summarises some common conditions and possible causes as well as the recommended solution. It includes troubleshooting tips for both the 3 stage water filters and the Reverse Osmosis water filter systems.
| Problem | Possible cause | Solution |
| No water production. | Feed water shut off.
Tank valve closed (RO systems). |
Turn on feed water (ball valve under sink).
Open tank valve (RO systems). |
| Leak at filter housing. | Defective or misaligned O-ring. Cartridge not installed correctly. |
Shut off feed valve & tank valve as applicable, turn off faucet. Then change or realign the O-ring on the filter cartridge before reinstalling |
| Leak at threaded connection or from tubing. | Loose connection nut.
Restrictive bend in tubing. |
Use thread tape on connectors and re-tighten.
Realign tubing. |
| Bad tasting water | Filter cartridge or RO membrane fouled/clogged. RO Tank contaminated. |
Replace filter cartridges. For RO systems replace RO membrane. For recommended cartridge replacement intervals, click here. Sanitise the RO tank. |
| High TDS reading (RO systems). |
Cross membrane pressure is too low.
Brine seal on membrane leaking. Membrane is due for replacement. |
Change pre-filters and check output pressure (should be around 80-100psi).
Determine if a seal or O-ring is bad. Replace RO membrane. |
| Little or no purified water flow from faucet | Blocked filter or hose. Loss of air pressure in tank (RO systems). |
Replace filter cartridges. For RO systems replace RO membrane. For recommended cartridge replacement intervals, click here. Pump air into tank to 7 psi. Check and replace valve or membrane as required. (RO systems) |
| Pump is working but not producing purified water. (RO systems) |
Pre-filter cartridge clogged.
Water inlet auto-shutoff valve failed (or water inlet solenoid valve failed). |
Check and replace cartridges.
Check and replace auto-shut off valve (or water inlet solenoid valve). |
| Pump not functioning (RO systems) |
Low water pressure.
Burnt out boosting pump. Burnt out transformer. |
Disconnect & test the 2 wires on the low pressure switch to see if the pump works. If yes, replace the low pressure switch. If no, replace the pump. |
| Pump cycling on and off abnormally | Pre-filter clogging or feed pressure is too low. | Change filters or adjust low pressure switch to 2 psi setting. |
| Pump turns on and off after a glass of water | Inadequate high pressure switch setting. | Set high pressure switch to 40 psi setting. |
| Fittings Blowing off or Filter Cartridges Bursting | Excessive water pressure at premises. | Fit a pressure limiting valve (PLV) to the water filter. Click here for Instructions on how to install a water pressure limiting valve.
